First night on the town last night! My friend Marshay and I, along with a small group, started out at a tapas bar. First incident of the night, caused by Roxy: the server, a very--very--fast speaker, introduced the special of the night as a 15 euro "menu" with different tapas. I decided we didn't want that for the group, so I asked him to please bring us each a menu (in my mind, the piece of paper I wanted was the same word, just said with a different accent) so that we could choose our own meals. 30 minutes later, I asked another waiter where our menus were....only to find out that what I was pointing out was called a "carta" and that "menu" meant the special of the day. In other words, not only did the waiter yell at me, but so did the cooks in the kitchen who had been preparing 2 servings of the specials for 20 minutes. So much for seeming native...Anyways, we ended up going with delicious samples of mussels, montaditos (bread with various toppings), and mushroom tortillas.
We then spent the next few hours walking and stopping in bars, meeting various strong personalities along the way, but spending a great few hours! One of the bar owners, a smiling man who has owned the bar for 20+ years, welcomes all the exchange students with open arms every year, and is the nicest bartender I've ever met. A chill, but hilarious first night (that ended "early", according to this country). Word of advice, especially to girls: eat plenty before you go, because bartenders LOVE to give away free shots, and don't wear heels.
Can't wait to go to a discoteca next (after many, many hours of complete rest) and spend the night life Spanish style!
Besos, Roxy
