Impression of Days 1-3

By popular demand, here is my attempt at reigning in all the sights, smells, sounds, and emotions of Valencia, Spain into a written blog (I solemnly swear to update once a week). There is a first for everything, and TODAY, that first is blogging!
Pues, January 16th, 2011, the sun rose on little Roxy, google-eyed, arriving in Valencia. What first hit me, and made me smile, were the smells! It was a warm, orange-tinted scent that made me feel comfortable and ready for adventure. My taxi took me to the Calle del Turia, where I live in a quaint, but comfortable little apartment with a wonderful host Doña, host father, and host brother and sister. Though my suitcase of clothes wasn’t here (and, three days later, has yet to arrive), I put on the jacket I had and went down to the street to observe. The narrow houses are mixes of reds and yellows with elegant white and black, lacey iron work. The streets are lined with trees that look like calligraphy, various fresh grocers, bustling, colorful Valencianos chattering away in a still-hard-to-catch-100% Spanish, and…yes. Bakeries. In fact, there is one on either side of my door. My Doña’s brother told me, on my first day, that I should weigh myself, and could consider my trip a failure if, by the end, I had not gained four kilos (…about 8 pounds more to hug). “Porque…nos gusta comer en Valencia, y lo hacemos bien!”
I live at the feet of two medieval “torres”, or towers, that mark the entrance of the “Ancient City”, the heart of Valencia. It’s like having King Arthur and his kingdom at my feet! We are touring the Ancient City tomorrow with my program, so more pictures will be posted, with descriptions.
Life is magical here!
Besos, Roxy
